Typescripts of letters and a diary of Lt. Col. George H. Hildt of Canal Dover, Ohio. Letters written mostly to parents, commencing with his appointment as Major in the 30th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He reports on troop movements, casualties, and supplies. He discusses the home farm business, the war economy, and his family, particularly his brother and army officer, Daniel G., and his cousin Hattie Baer of Baltimore Maryland. Diary details events of the siege of Atlanta.

In April 1861 George H. Hildt was mustered in Co. F, 16th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and later joined the 30th O.V.I. where he reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
